Transit, peering and the path to the rest of the internet

IP transit is the service of carrying your traffic to and from the entire internet. When you buy transit, your upstream announces your routes to the world and accepts traffic destined for you — in both directions, for every destination.

Peering is different: it is a direct, usually settlement-free exchange of traffic between two networks, limited to each network's own routes and customers. Peering lowers cost and latency for the destinations it covers, but it does not give you reachability to the whole internet. Transit does. Most networks use a blend of both.

Why BGP matters

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is how networks announce which IP prefixes they can reach. With a BGP session to your upstream, you announce your own prefixes and ASN, and you receive the full internet routing table in return.

That control is the point: with BGP you can multi-home across several upstreams, steer traffic with communities, and fail over automatically if a path goes down. For an ISP, that resilience is not optional.

What to evaluate in an upstream

Blend and diversity: a good transit provider blends multiple tier-1 carriers so no single carrier's outage or congestion becomes yours. Ask which upstreams sit behind the transit.

Peering density: the more direct peers your upstream has, the more of your traffic is delivered over short, settlement-free paths — lower latency and lower cost. A network with 1,000+ peers gives you reach you would otherwise pay transit for.

Ports and commitments: look for 1G to 400G handoffs with burstable or committed billing so capacity scales with your subscriber base, plus DDoS mitigation included rather than bolted on.

Keeping latency and cost predictable

As you add subscribers, your traffic profile changes. A transit partner with a measured backbone and documented inter-city latency lets you plan capacity instead of reacting to it.
